Year 2004 : Rajinikanth Interviews

Kumudam Magazine 2004 (Scroll below for English Translation)

"People always cast their votes out of emotion, anger, or sympathy." – Rajinikanth

Q: There are a lot of rumours regarding Jaggubhai. People are debating — will it start? Will it be postponed? What's happening exactly?
A: We were supposed to start in July. But until August 15, people say it's a "Soonya Madham" (inauspicious period). After August 15, we will start immediately.

Q: In the still released during the announcement, your get-up resembles Osama Bin Laden — a rifle by your side, a kumkum tilak on your forehead, and a rudraksha around your neck. What do these convey?
A: Many think Jaggubhai was a sudden decision, but that's not true. This story has been in my mind for 20 years. I heard many scripts for my next project, but none satisfied me. So, I narrated this story to Ravikumar. He said, "It’s good. Let's do it." The photo you are mentioning is very significant to the movie. You’ll understand its meaning once you watch the film.

Q: Who is the heroine?
A: We are in talks with Aishwarya Rai. The heroine’s role in this film is crucial, like Neelambari's in Padayappa. Actually, Neelambari’s role should have originally been played by Aishwarya Rai, but due to a scheduling conflict with her English film, it didn’t happen then. Hopefully, it will happen now.

Q: Many said Neelambari's character was based on CM Jayalalithaa. Is there any political undertone this time?
A: Nothing like that. There was no politics in it. Only the style, mannerisms, and energy might remind you of someone.

Q: Jaggubhai's tagline says, “God, save me from my friends. I can handle my enemies!” What does this mean?
A: (Laughs) It's from the story itself. At one point, the hero feels more hurt by his friends than by his enemies. It's true in politics, cinema, and even normal life. Friends are more important than parents or teachers. Good friends lead to good habits, and bad ones... you know the rest.

Q: Does this refer to Kalaignar and his associates?
A: (Laughs, then pauses) Kalaignar is a man of great stature. Everyone knows he is a friend... I don't want to name others.

Q: Did you speak to Kalaignar after the elections?
A: No. But I congratulated those who received ministerial positions — it's basic courtesy. Losing doesn’t mean anyone deserves disrespect.

Q: Before becoming "Superstar Rajinikanth," you explored a wide range of roles. But later, your films followed the 'Superstar formula'. Now, directors like Bala, Dharani, Selvaraghavan, and Gautham are bringing a new trend. Will you adapt?
A: Expectations from me are different. People expect heroism. I can't break that. Technically, we are updating. But regarding the theme, I stick to what people want. I don't need films for money or fame anymore. I'm careful because the stakes are higher now.

Q: Producers, distributors, and theatre owners say, "After MGR, only Rajini films guarantee profits." MGR entered politics. Your films’ dialogues created political expectations too. Why haven't you entered politics directly?
A: I’ve wanted to clarify this for a long time. Take the dialogue from Muthu: "I don't know when I will come, how I will come. But I will come at the appointed time." It wasn't about politics! Yet the media interpreted it that way. Honestly, politics isn't something I’ve decided on. I follow destiny. If it’s meant to happen, it will.

Q: If circumstances demand, will you enter politics in the future?
A: I don't know! Can you predict what will happen in two years? Everything is in God's hands.

Q: You popularised the idea of linking rivers. What’s the current state of the project?
A: It’s unfortunate politicians lack foresight. True statesmen think long-term. KS Rao spoke about it long ago. Even if it takes 40 years, future generations will benefit. Money is not an issue — political will is. Unless everyone pulls together, it won’t move forward. I spoke about it; even Kalaignar did. But one person speaking isn’t enough.

Q: Critics say river-linking could submerge many areas.
A: For 100 people to benefit, a few will face hardship. That's the harsh reality. Even when we do Bhoomi Pooja for a house, it’s to apologize to the creatures living there. Sacrifices are inevitable for greater good.

Q: Why did you announce "My vote is for BJP" publicly?
A: I already explained. Though many spoke about river-linking, I believe BJP is serious about implementing it. I have direct access to them to push this project. It wasn’t about entering politics — just support for an important cause.

Q: Your clash with Dr. Ramadoss?
A: This election was like a tidal wave — even a banyan tree would've been uprooted. Our protest against PMK was democratic. If someone attacks my fans, I must speak up. Silence would have been cowardice.

Q: PMK opposed Baba. Now, having won 6 seats, will their opposition intensify against Jaggubhai?
A: Let’s see. There’s another election in 2006! (Laughs) Politicians, big or small, have faced defeats — even giants like Kamaraj. Cinema tickets don't equal votes. Ramadoss knows it too. Courts exist if needed.

Q: Will the clash between you and Ramadoss continue?
A: Kalaignar helped a lot in keeping things peaceful. Both Ramadoss and I should thank him.

Q: What's your view on the election results?
A: People vote emotionally — in anger, in sympathy. It's not always the most informed decision. But one thing is clear: people watch silently and act at the right time.

Q: Did you receive an invitation for Stalin’s daughter’s wedding?
A: Yes, but not formally. Personal occasions should rise above politics.

Q: DMK, ADMK — people seem tired of only these two options. Will you fill the vacant third space?
A: (Laughs) Again the same question! As I said, when the Owner (God) commands, the worker (me) will act. Until then, everything rests with Him. (Points to a photo of Swami Raghavendra.)
